Man's Body Discovered On Street In Maplewood

MAPLEWOOD, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- The body of a man was discovered on the street in a quiet New Jersey neighborhood.

CBS2's Christine Sloan reported law enforcement sources said the call initially came in as a body in the street on Wyoming Avenue in Maplewood.

Sources said that so far it's a mystery as to how the body got there because evidence at the scene doesn't suggest a hit-and-run.

"According to what I have seen and heard, they were found in the middle of the road unresponsive," resident Dave Pressel said.

Pressel lives across the street from where the body of the man was found.

"It's a very busy road at 4:30 in the morning. Who knows what is happening," Pressel said. "It's just a sad and unfortunate occurrence."

Resident Shannon Schlageter said that drivers don't pay attention on the road.

"I run on Wyoming all the time and it's scary and there are cars that some don't pay attention, and you can get hit," Schlageter said.

Sources said there was no bike or indication the victim, between 45 and 50 years old, was walking or running.

"I think it is safer at 4:30 in the morning. When I have gotten up that early to ride there are not many cars, obviously," resident Eric Gordon said.

Law enforcement told CBS2 they are looking at a wide range of sceaniors including the possibility of the body being dumped in the road.

The Essex County Prosecutor's Office is awaiting the results of an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
