Man Arrested For Allegedly Threatening Rep. Maloney Over Gun Control Bill
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Authorities have arrested a man for allegedly threatening New York Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney over her proposed gun control legislation.
Ronald Buchanan, of Elmira, N.Y., was charged with aggravated harassment and menacing on Thursday, the New York Post reported. He was held in lieu of $20,000 bail.
Maloney said she received three phone calls earlier this month at her Manhattan office that were answered by young interns, who were "understandably shaken by this experience."
She said the calls referred to gun control legislation she had introduced last month. The bill would require weapons owners to hold liability insurance before being allowed to purchase a gun and imposes a fine of $10,000 if an owner is found not to have the required coverage.
Maloney said the bill would "give innocent victims of gun violence some recourse if they are injured." Service members and law enforcement officers would be exempt from the insurance requirement.
According to prosecutors, Buchanan allegedly said in one of the phone calls that the congresswoman "needs to stay away from my Second Amendment rights.''
