Maddie's Pet Adoption Days Offers Thousands of Pets For Free This Weekend To Qualified Adopters

By Susan Richard

New York (CBSNewYork) A pet's love may be priceless, but this weekend, thousands of animals will be available for free to qualified adopters from more than 90 New York City area rescue groups and shelters. All you have to do is provide a loving forever home.

1010WINS' Susan Richard reports:

It's all part of Maddie's Pet Adoption days, a nationwide event taking place May 31 & June 1, 2014. In our area, it's being offered in partnership with the Mayor's Alliance for New York City's Animals, whose mission is to transform New York City into a no-kill community by 2015, where no dogs or cats of reasonable health or temperament are killed simply because they do not have homes.

Here's how it works: The Maddie's Fund will pay rescue organizations $500 for each adoption of a young and healthy animal, $1,000 for each adoption of a dog or cat who is 7 years of age or older, or who has been treated for one or more medical condition, and $2,000 for each adoption involving a dog or cat who is 7 years of age or older and who also has a medical condition.

These amounts are significantly higher than the normal fees paid by adopters and will help these groups to continue to pull at risk animals out of the city shelters as part of the New Hope Program of Animal Care & Control of New York City. AC&C will also be participating in this week's event, giving you the chance to become one of "New York's Kindest" by adopting a pet directly from the city shelter system.

Adoption events take place throughout the five boroughs. Click here for a full list:

Saturday will be from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. right outside Petco-Union Square at 860 Broadway at 17th street. On Sunday, head to the south end of Union Square Park on Broadway and East 14th street from Noon to 5:00 p.m.
