Lower East Side Bakery Honors Beyonce's Pregnancy With Growing 'Baby Bun'

By Annie Reuter

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- While seasonal treats are a staple at bakeries and coffee shops throughout the city, Lower East Side's Babycakes is taking things one step further.

The vegan bakery recently created a new addition to its list: the "baby-bump" bun, inspired by Beyonce's pregnancy.

The owners of Babycakes came up with the idea after the hit singer announced her pregnancy at the MTV Video Music Awards last month.

"When we learned about Beyonce having a bun in her oven, we all got teary-eyed because we adore her and play her music at BabyCakes all the time," Erin McKenna, the bakery's owner, told CBSNewYork. "We thought it would be fun to make a bun in her honor."

Each week, McKenna and her staff at 248 Broome Street check a pregnancy website to estimate the baby's size and then create a new pastry. As a result, the bun will grow in size as Beyonce's baby bump does. The progress is then announced to the store's fans on Twitter and Facebook.

Some Babycakes customers stop in weekly to view the bun's progress, even though it isn't available for sale.

But, if you are wondering just which ingredients are used to create the weekly baby bump, McKenna revealed the not-so-secret concoction to CBSNewYork. The pastry is made with garbanzo fava bean flour, pumpkin puree, pear puree, agave nectar, coconut oil and vanilla glaze.

While it's uncertain if Beyonce or Jay-Z have heard of Babycakes' bun creation, we're pretty sure Jay-Z won't be rapping about having a bun in the bakery's oven anytime soon.
