Lots Of Drivers Lose Control On Snowy Roads Friday
NEW YORK (CBS 2) -- It was slow going Friday as drivers tried to take it easy on the roads, but there was a lot of slipping and sliding, Jay Dow reports.
Well before dawn, both residential streets and major highways were covered with a few inches of snow. Of course, it was nothing like last month's blizzard, but it was enough to send one driver sliding off an exit ramp on Rt. 17 North in Paramus.
"I was just trying to get off the exit over here to get to work, and all of a sudden my car just kept going straight and I just hit the curb over here. It's all ice," said driver Ramon Parerra.
On Degraw Avenue in Teaneck, traction was optional for the driver of one sedan who momentarily lost control during a turn.
Across the Hudson River in Westchester County, slipping and sliding was also the theme of the early morning commute. The worst offenders were drivers in rear-wheel drive sports cars like one on Rt. 87 in Tarrytown, which barely managed to stay in their lane.
Police officers had an extremely busy morning attending simple slide outs and more serious accidents.
"We saw an SUV that spun out and hit the wall," said CBS 2's Tony Aiello in Mobile2 in Yonkers. which CBS2 Reporter Tony Aiello ran into on air this morning.
So how is this all going to shape up for road crews across our region? "By the time the plows clear it out it will be after the rush hour. So I'm sure it will be a mess for people," said Jeff Seribin, of Ft. Lee Department of Public Works.
"We'll be here all day. Until at least all the streets are close to black," he added.
