28-Year-Old Woman Struck By Stray Bullet In Queens
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A 28-year-old woman was hit by a stray bullet as she was coming out of the subway system in Queens.
It happened around 7 a.m. Friday at 41st Avenue and 10th Street in Long Island City.
The woman was exiting the Queensbridge F subway train station when she was shot in the stomach.
She was not the intended target.
Police said the suspect -- later identified as 23-year-old Snooze Brown -- had been arguing with a 19-year-old woman when he brandished a gun and fired a shot at her.
The shot missed and hit the victim.
The victim was taken to the hospital in stable condition.
Police are on the scene searching for the shooter.
The station is in front of the Queensbridge Houses where residents said they've noticed an uptick in violence recently.
"It's just crazy, she just can't come out the train and go where she's going," one resident said.
"There has been an escalating violent atmosphere happening since the beginning of the year, back and forth within the communities in NYCHA in this area and we have all been very concerned," another resident said.
Last February, Mayor Bill de Blasio had visited the area praising community leaders for what was at the time a dramatic drop in gun-related violence at the complex.
