Reports Of Small Aircraft In Water Off Long Beach Island Unfounded, Sheriff's Office Says

LONG BEACH ISLAND, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- The Ocean County Sheriff's office said reports of a small aircraft crashing into the water off Long Beach Island on Thursday were unfounded.

Sources told CBS2 no plane, debris or people were ever found or confirmed and the search was called off.

The sheriff's office received a report around 11:30 a.m. about an aircraft, believed to be a glider, down roughly a mile off shore near 26th Street.

The U.S Coast Guard and New Jersey State Police conducted a search of the area.

Authorities said they could not find signs of anything that had gone down into the water.
