6-year-old hurt by falling bricks in Queens, police say

A 6-year-old girl was hurt by falling bricks in Maspeth, Queens, police said.

She suffered a minor head injury. The girl's mother said the child also suffered a broken leg which will require surgery.

The girl was taken to Bellevue Hospital and is stable.

It happened around 7:35 p.m. Thursday on 59th Street between Maspeth Avenue and 56th Drive.

Department of Buildings officials said a 4-by-3-foot section of brick veneer fell from the side of a garage building and onto the sidewalk.

A family friend told CBS News New York the little girl's father works at the construction site, and the little girl walked up to pop in and say hi to her father when the section of bricks fell.

"We heard her screaming," a witness said.

"I kind of heard them ... trying to call the EMTs and stuff. So I'm glad she's OK," said neighbor Glenn Winckowski.

The bricks are the last few feet of the property next door, which is a large industrial building which neighbors say used to be a thrift shop. After the bricks fell Thursday night, a violation was issued to the property owner for failing to maintain the garage building, officials said.
