Largest Meteorite Auction Ever To Be Held In New York
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The largest auction of meteorites ever will be held in New York this weekend.
The auction at the Fletcher Sinclair Mansion on the Upper East Side this Sunday promises to be out of this world.
Some 125 meteorites, including a large portion of the Peekskill meteorite which came crashing down on a Chevy Malibu on Oct. 9, 1992, will be offered by Heritage Auctions.

The prized-piece up for grabs is a chunk of the moon that was discovered in the desert of Libya. New York's "Meteorite Man" Darryl Pitt said the piece is expected to fetch more than $300,000.
"Extraterrestrial real estate is on the rise," Pitt told 1010 WINS reporter John Montone.

A piece of the famous Fukang meteorite which was discovered in China will also be up for bid and is expected to go for more than $100,000.
"It's from a planet that no longer exists," Pitt said. "These are extraterrestrial gemstones. It is the most exquisite and beautiful extraterrestrial substance known."
Other pieces being offered include a 21-pound meteorite resembling a human skull, known as "the mask," that was found in Africa and a 179-pound meteorite that has an uncanny resemblance to Edward Munch's "The Scream."
