Search For Killer Continues 2 Months After Slaying Of Jogger Karina Vetrano
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- It has now been two months since jogger Karina Vetrano was found murdered in a Queens park, and police as of Monday were still searching for the culprit.
Karina Vetrano, 30, was murdered while running through Spring Creek Park in Howard Beach on Aug. 2. Police said she was strangled and possibly sexually assaulted. Her father along with authorities found her body hours after she didn't return home from her jog.
As WCBS 880's Rich Lamb reported, an Ozone Park, Queens man – Matthew Fox, 47 – was found naked and screaming in the mud last week near the marsh were Vetrano was killed.
NYPD Chief of Detectives Robert Boyce said the case, and the discovery of Fox, remained under investigation Monday.
"To answer your question about that individual who was clearly in a psychotic moment, his DNA was collected and it was sent down, and that's where we are," Boyce said. "It has not come back yet."
But Boyce cautioned, "Right now, we don't believe him to be a person of interest."
Boyce added that although the NYPD has received 180 tips in the Vetrano case, no one has been able to lead investigators to a completely different man seen in a police sketch whom they want to question.
