Johan Santana Receives Key To The City From Bloomberg Prior To Subway-Series Opener
NEW YORK (WFAN) - Johan Santana received a ton of recognition from the sports world and swept the Tri-State area after tossing the first no-hitter in franchise history against the St. Louis Cardinals on June 1st.
But now the Mets' left-handed starter received arguably the greatest honor that one can have bestowed upon him.
A Cy Young Award? Nope, the 33-year-old already has two of those.
How about a key to the greatest city in the world?
Check.
Prior to the opener of the second round of the Subway Series on Friday night, the four-time All-Star was presented with a key to New York City by Mayor Michael Bloomberg at Citi Field.
The ceremony was at 6:30, though it didn't take place on the field. Bloomberg granted Santana the gift in the Mets' media room.
The 12-year MLB veteran has had some tough luck this season, but he's still managed to be very effective for the National League Wild Card-leading Mets. Santana currently stands at 5-3 with a 3.00 ERA in 14 starts, recording 84 strikeouts to 28 walks.
