Jersey City To Name First African-American Fire Chief
JERSEY CITY, N.J. (AP) -- New Jersey's second largest city will swear in its first African-American fire chief on Friday.
Darren Rivers will be the Jersey City Fire Department's 17th chief since the department began more than 139 years ago.
Rivers became a firefighter in 1982. He rose through the ranks and became deputy chief in 2007.
The married father of five has a son who is a firefighter.
Mayor Jerramiah Healy says it is fitting that Jersey City's diversity is reflected in government leadership.
