People Gather On Intrepid To Celebrate Memorial Day

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- People have gathered on the USS Intrepid to celebrate Memorial Day this weekend.

Carla, who is from Putnam, New York, told 1010 WINS' Roger Stern that being at the Intrepid is just as important as other pastimes this holiday weekend.

"It turns into a big barbecue, happy-fest, but we want to come down and spend the weekend with my brother-in-law who has been in the Navy and who has been in Desert Storm, and spend time with him," she said.

Nate, who is from Babylon and served in Iraq, said he knows what we owe those who sacrificed their lives, not to mention the veterans who returned safely.

"It's not an easy task to be away from family and going to a foreign land," Nate said.

Many at the Intrepid said that between the picnics and going to the beach, we should remember those who didn't make it back to enjoy the weekend.
