BRICK, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) - Authorities are investigating a grisly discovery in wooded area in Brick Township.
Two men driving along a road Tuesday spotted what appears to be a human skull at the edge of a wooded area in the Lake Riviera section on Tuesday afternoon, said Ocean County Prosecutor's Office spokesman Al Della Fave.
"They pulled over to examine it, and immediately called the police,'' Della Fave said.
Nearby roads were closed Wednesday morning as investigators returned to the scene to search for any additional evidence that might be nearby.
Authorities are canvassing the area of Old Toms River Road and Arizona Drive between Beaverson Boulevard and Emerald Drive. Click here to check current traffic conditions.
Della Fave said the death of the person to whom the skull belonged does not appear to have happened recently.
Authorities are checking missing persons reports to see if any might be related to the discovery.
Anyone with information is asked to call the Brick Township Police Department at 732-262-1143 or the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office at 732-929-2027.
