Heyman: Yankees, Robinson Cano Are Roughly $150 Million Apart
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The Yankees and free agent Robinson Cano are far apart in their negotiations.
Like, really far apart.
According to WFAN/CBSSports.com baseball insider Jon Heyman, the five-time All-Star is still looking for $310 million over 10 years from the Bronx Bombers, while New York is currently offering slightly more than half that.
Several weeks ago, Yankees general manager Brian Cashman offered the 31-year-old roughly $160 million over seven years, Heyman reported.
Cano is the top free agent on the market, and he's not excepted to sign anytime soon. Negotiations with the Yankees -- and other clubs -- could go into February. Despite the reported stalemate, New York remains the overwhelming favorite to sign the superstar second baseman.
Brodie Van Wagenen will be the man behind Cano's new deal, but rap mogul Shawn "Jay Z" Carter is also "intimately involved in all areas" of the process, Van Wagenen said on Sunday on SiriusXM's MLB Network Radio.
"That has been true for the last six months," he said. "It's certainly true now. Jay is a very, very successful businessman, who has a keen understanding of value, a keen understanding of brands and a keen understand of what this player, Robinson Cano, wants to accomplish in his career."
Preparing for the possibility that Cano won't be back in the Bronx in 2014, the Yankees have kicked the tires on other productive middle infielders. New York has reportedly inquired about Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips and is interested in free agent Jhonny Peralta.
The two-time Gold Glove Award winner batted .314 with 27 homers and 107 RBIs for the Yankees in 2013.
