NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry is recovering in the hospital Monday after he collapsed on stage during a performance in Brooklyn.
Perry was transferred to Columbia Presbyterian hospital overnight where his band mates say he's surrounded by family and friends after quite the scare Sunday night during a concert in Coney Island.
Around 9:30 p.m., Perry was performing with Alice Cooper and Johnny Depp as part of his side band, the Hollywood Vampires, at the Ford Amphitheater when he suddenly became ill.
Fans described him as dizzy and stumbling off stage.
"He sat down on the drum riser and the next thing you know, he was gone," fan Amanda Howard said. "I guess he went behind the amplifiers and we just didn't see him come back."
"I saw him playing and then he just fell behind Alice," said fan Ashley Cummins.
Cell phone video shows crew members tending to Perry, carrying him off stage. He was taken to Coney Island Hospital in critical but stable condition.
After his collapse, the show went on. Word didn't spread until frontman Alice Cooper tweeted, "Thanks to everyone asking about our brother @JoePerry. He is stable right now, with family & is under the best care."
Fans who woke up to the news Monday are hoping their rock idol recovers.
"I remember one time I couldn't get a ticket to Aerosmith in New York. I ended up jumping on a plane and going to Phoenix," fan Jeff Shaw said. "He's right up there with the very top echelon of guitarists."
"We hope he feels better," said fan Rosemarie Dija.
The show at the Ford Amphitheater was the ninth tour stop for the Hollywood Vampires.
On Twitter, Perry's team thanked fans for their well wishes. They said he's stable and receiving the "best care" at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital.
