Good Samaritans Help Heart Attack Victim At NY Gym
NEW YORK (AP) -- If you're going to join a gym, make it one that's popular with off-duty and retired firefighters.
That lesson was learned by New Yorker William LoGerfo after his heart stopped during a workout on a stair climber.
Three men exercising nearby sprang into action and performed CPR.
They were off-duty Firefighter Ken LaBarbera, retired Fire Department Lt. Fred Capetta and off-duty emergency medical technician James Manti.
Together, the trio moved LoGerfo to an open spot on the gym floor and hooked him up to a defibrillator. They delivered a lifesaving shock to his heart and continued CPR until paramedics arrived.
The rescue happened Thursday at a New York Sports Club on Staten Island, where many firefighters live.
