MINEOLA, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- A Long Island organization is encouraging young women to one day run for office.
As WCBS-880's Sophia Hall explained, women have made strides on Long Island when it comes to running and winning a seat in office with Nassau County DA Madeline Singas and Rep. Kathleen Rice (D-NY) leading the way.
Barbara Beatus of Girls Inc of Long Island encourages young women to reach for their goals; including the possibility of running for office.
"How important it is to really be out there and use your voice, and the more people do that, the more the world gets comfortable with seeing people in power," Beatus said.
She said with Hillary Clinton running for president, some women may be discouraged from running.
"She has been treated a certain way, and it might be very subconscious where you see that and think 'I don't really want to be out in the spotlight like that, and be under scrutiny," she said.
