EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) — Veteran defensive tackle Shaun Rogers is holding out hope of playing for the New York Giants this season despite developing a blood clot in training camp.
Rogers has been on the sideline the past few practices, using a stationary bike and exercising with other injured players.
The 33-year-old said Sunday that he was hurt at training camp at the University at Albany and his leg swelled after the Giants preseason game in Jacksonville on Aug. 10. The Giants initially said it was a season-ending injury because he would not be able to play while taking blood-thinning medication.
Rogers, however, got a second opinion and he said there's a chance he can play in 2012.
"We're still in the process of making that decision," he said Sunday.
The Giants have to cut their roster to 53 players by Friday and it's hard to say whether they can afford to keep him on the active roster with the injury.
"That's most definitely the point, to try and get out there as soon as possible and be able to be effective by whatever means they need me to be effective," he said.
The replacement officials made a mistake in the Bears-Giants' preseason game on Friday night, giving the Super Bowl champions an untimed extra play at the end of the first quarter after Bears defensive back Charles Tillman was called for pass interference as the clock expired.
Under NFL rules, untimed plays are only used at either the end of the half or the end of regulation after a penalty against the defense.
Three games into the preseason, the Giants leader in sacks is defensive end Adewale Ojomo. The free agent from Miami has three sacks and has been making an impression on one of the deepest defensive lines in the league.
"One thing I never do is I never look at the roster," Ojomo said. "I never count the amount of guys in the defensive line room. I never do that. I always pay attention to me. I know once I get me straight, I'll be OK."
Coach Tom Coughlin said Ojomo is green, but he has shown flashes.
Another free agent who has impressed the coach is defensive end Matt Broha. The Louisiana Tech product has two sacks.
EXTRA POINTS: Two-time Pro Bowl defensive end Osi Umenyiora (knee) and guard Chris Snee (sore leg) sat out the practice with injuries that were not considered serious. Second-year WR Jerrel Jernigan (leg) also was a newcomer to the injured list. ...LB Jacquian Williams, who is getting back in gear after a hip injury, had a nice interception in the practice.
