Four Legged Fans 'Bark In The Park' With The Brooklyn Cyclones
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- MCU Park in Coney Island is going to the dogs, as the Brooklyn Cyclones host the annual "Bark In The Park", on Wednesday.
The stadium's bleacher section — renamed "The BOW-WOW Zone" for the night — will be reserved for those who bring their pooches to the game in which the Cyclones takes on the Tri-City Valley Cats.
1010 WINS' Susan Richard reports:
Pre-game activities begin at 4 p.m. outside the main gate and include:
* Dog and cat adoptions by the Mayor's Alliance For New York City's Animals and Sean Casey Animal Rescue.
* Low-cost pet microchipping ($25) for dogs and cats
* Dog licensing by NYC Department Of Health
* Representatives from NYC's Office of Emergency Management / Ready New York on hand to provide information on steps pet owners should take to protect your pet in emergencies. Click HERE for OEM's Pets Guide.
At 7:00 p.m. inside the park, the Maddie's Fund Mascot will toss the ceremonial first pitch, and dogs and their people can join in the Parade of Pooches around the outfield.
Back by popular demand, the Frisbee-chasing dogs from PawStars, the disc and sport dog group founded by Kara and Erich Steffensen, will stage several exhibitions on the field between innings.
This year, local heroes who went above and beyond on behalf of New York City pets and their people in response to Superstorm Sandy will be honored. That includes Sean Casey of Sean Casey Animal Rescue, who opened up his shelter to temporarily house pets of families who were displaced, and Debbie Fierro, a driver for the Wheels Of Hope Program of the Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals. After the storm, Debbie drove into affected areas for days, providing life saving transport for displaced animals, as well as much needed food and other supplies.
Tickets to Bark In The Park are $10 and include one person and up to two dogs, with seating in the bleacher section. On the day of the game, tickets can be purchased at the Cyclones' box office. A portion of ticket sales will be donated to support the lifesaving programs of the Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals, including Wheels Of Hope, which provides transportation for animals at risk of euthanasia in the city shelters to no-kill rescue organizations across the metro area.
