Five Working NYC Firehouses Designated As Landmarks

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) - Five New York City firehouses have received landmark status.

The firehouses have "distinctive architecture" and have been in continuous use for more than a century, according to the city's Landmarks Preservation Commission.

The newly landmarked firehouses are located in Sunset Park and Windsor Terrace in Brooklyn, Bathgate and Longwood in the Bronx and in Rockaway Park, Queens.

"The Landmarks Preservation Commission has not only recognized the beautiful architecture and rich histories of these firehouses, they've also paid tribute to every FDNY firefighter who has called them home for more than a century," said FDNY Commissioner Sal Cassano.

The city is now home to 37 landmarked firehouses and of those, 32 are still operating.
