NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Host Stephen Colbert is signing off after nine years of playing a conservative talk show host.

"I think that Colbert has sort of this innate talent of taking what's relevant and keeping sort of his finger on the pulse of society, but at the same time also being the amazing comedian that he is and sort of thinking on the spot," one woman told WCBS 880's Peter Haskell.

"The hardest thing, I think, to have in America is to have some sort of satirical way of dealing with political problems, which are extremely important," one man said.

"Since I was 17, I've been watching him," a woman said. "And he made me interested in politics and current events and news, and he's just hilarious."

Colbert is replacing David Letterman as host of the "Late Show" on CBS next year after Letterman announced earlier this year he was retiring after more than 30 years in late night.

Colbert's fans aren't sure what to expect, but one man said, "We'll be watching that show."

Letterman will host his final broadcast May 20.

"The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore" will replace Colbert on Comedy Central.
