1010 WINS 9/11 Series: Female 9/11 First Responders Hope Their Stories Won't Be Forgotten

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- To some, it seems as though the stories of the female heroes of 9/11 have gotten lost in the shuffle.

Three women first responders died in the attacks, including police officer Moira Smith, Port Authority Police Capt. Kathy Mazza and EMT Yamel Merino.

There are also hundreds of female first responders who survived, but were severely injured. Retired police officer Carol Paukner was trapped with a man when the second tower collapsed.

"I don't know how long I was in there. How long I was trapped. I just know, it was eerie because it was silent," she told 1010 WINS' Carol D'Auria.

Retired fire Capt. Brenda Berkman said the stories of the female first responders are inspirational and should never be forgotten.

"We went into work injured. We spent our off tours at the site," she said.

The surviving responders hope the stories of both the men and women who worked at Ground Zero will inspire people to work together to make the country better.
