Fall Means Apples In The Hudson Valley

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, NY (WCBS 880) - Autumn has fallen upon us and nothing says fall more than a nice, crisp, tart apple.

WCBS 880's Deborah Rodriguez On The Story

When it comes to apples, Talea Fincke of Montgomery Place Orchards in Annandale-on-Hudson knows her business.

She tends to stay away from the super popular.

"Honey Crisp is probably our number one apple that's asked for and for that reason, I don't like it because I feel like it's the homecoming queen and I'm happy when she's left the room, that other apples get their attention," she said. "A Honey Crisp apple to me is very good, but it's quick like a roller coaster ride, like it gives you a quick flash. The older apples, I feel like when I eat one of those, I need to sit down and get a bottle of wine and light a candle."

One of those older apples might be a Golden Russet apple.

"I always can envision Ben Franklin putting his feet up, peeling one of those Golden Russets and spouting out words of wisdom," she said.

Another would be the Pink Pearl apple with its secrets within.

"It's pink inside. It's a tarter apple. It makes the most beautiful pie," Fincke told WCBS 880 reporter and anchor Deborah Rodriguez.

Another favorite is the Karmijn de Sonnaville apple from Holland, with its intense tart taste.

But all the recent rain has been bad news for this year's apple crop.

"It dilutes the flavor when it rains this much. There's certain seasons when apples just bite ya' back, like they're so crisp and so good," she said.

Still, from Rodriguez's sampling, there is plenty of apple goodness to go around.
