Escalator Reopens At Lindenhurst LIRR Station Months After Fatal Accident
LINDENHURST, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- An escalator at the Long Island Rail Road station in Lindenhurst has reopened months after a deadly accident.
Irene Bernatzky, 88, was killed on March 13 after officials said she fell on the moving stairs and was strangled when her clothing got entangled in the escalator mechanics.

The escalator had been shut down for six months to undergo repairs.
The railroad replaced and refurbished major components and installed sensors that shut down the system when they detect something is caught in the machinery.
Bernatzky's death forced the LIRR to review all of its 19 escalators. Some were taken out of service so the LIRR could make repairs and install new safety technology.
