A woman was struck and killed in a hit-and-run in Brooklyn on Friday morning.

It happened at around 6:45 a.m. on Pitkin Avenue near Mother Gaston Boulevard in the Brownsville section.

The woman was struck by a gray sedan that fled the scene, police said.

Surveillance video from the scene shows the woman leaving a doorstep and waiting at the intersection for a few seconds. As she crosses Pitkin Avenue on Mother Gaston Boulevard, the video shows a dark car in the wrong lane hit her. Video shows her body roll out from underneath the car near the corner of Pitkin and Osborn Street. It appears she was dragged for nearly two blocks.

Emergency responders declared her dead at the scene.

The car that hit her didn't stop, officials said. Parts of the street were blocked off Friday morning as emergency responders worked to remove her body.

"It's a tragedy," Andy Sierra, who supervises a store nearby, said. "No human being deserves to die like that."

Area residents told CBS News New York the victim lived in the neighborhood. Officials have not yet released her identity.

"She would come around and ask for a couple of dollars here and there. I used to give a couple of dollars and buy her food," Sierra said. "I gave her some clothes and some sneakers last Saturday."

The search continues for the driver. So far, no arrests have been made.
