'His Excellency:' De Niro Named Ambassador To Mayor's Office Of Media And Entertainment

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Diplomatic might not be the first word that would come to mind when you think of Robert De Niro.

But the Academy Award-winning actor and New York City native was appointed an official ambassador for Mayor Bill de Blasio's Office of Media and Entertainment -- and he's enjoying it.

Speaking to an audience at the Museum of the Moving Image in Queens on Wednesday, De Niro gave a colorful acceptance speech for his new position -- expletives and all.

"I feel I've been an ambassador for New York my entire career, so thank you for making it official today," De Niro said. "From now on please address me as His excellency Robert De Niro Ambassador or if you wanted to make it more New York authentic his f---ing excellency Robert De Niro Ambassador. You got a problem with that?"

If they did, no one spoke up, WCBS 880's Rich Lamb reported.

Other ambassadors for 2016 include Lady Gaga, Jane Rosenthal and Alicia Keys, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

The Office of Media and Entertainment is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.
