Connecticut Forestry Officials Work To Prevent Spread Of Emerald Ash Borer Through Firewood
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Campers along the Massachusetts-Connecticut border are likely to be stopped at a checkpoint if they're headed into Connecticut loaded with firewood this weekend.
Connecticut forestry officials are ticking along the border, making sure campers aren't transporting firewood into the state from woods, especially near the Worcester area, WCBS 880's Connecticut Bureau Chief Fran Schneidau reported.

Connecticut's head of the forestry department, Chris Martin, said every effort is being made to keep a tree-killing insect, the emerald ash borer, from coming into the state.
"The emerald ash borer will live right inside the bark of the tree and basically just cut off the blood flow of the tree and kill the tree standing in a very quick period of time," he said.
Martin says over the long holiday weekend, many campers transport firewood that could be loaded with the ash borer from one camping site to another.
"What they don't know is that they're moving more than just firewood, they're actually moving insects," Martin said.
He says the border check is more of an educational effort to inform campers of the potential dangers.
