Community Shocked By Islip Teen's Death

ISLIP, NY (WCBS 880) - Family and friends are heartbroken over the death of an 18-year-old who was killed Saturday.

Suffolk County police are continuing their investigation into the weekend killing of Kyle Underhill.

Those who knew him describe Underhill as kind, gregarious, and hardworking.

His boss, Werner Simon at Manhattan Sweets Boutique Bakery in Islip, said Underhill was a special young man.

"He was very hard worker, good person to deal with, and he was always there, wanted to help whenever he could," Simon told WCBS 880 Long Island Bureau Chief Mike Xirinachs. "We really don't know why anybody would do anything to him."

He called news of Underhill's death "devastating."

A friend called Underhill the most caring person you could ever meet.

Police are looking into a possible clue in a comment Underhill wrote in his high school yearbook referring to the "people he hated so much."

Underhill's family and friends had been worried about him since Wednesday night when he was last seen on Brook Street. The next day his family went to police to report him missing.

Investigators found his body at 9:20 a.m. Saturday in a marshy area off of Brook Street. He was pronounced dead by an assistant medical examiner from the Office of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner.

Investigators suspect foul play.

Underhill recently graduated from Islip High School and attended college in Farmingdale. He worked part time for the bakery and as a full time busboy at Tellers Restaurant in Islip.
