College Of New Rochelle's School Of Arts And Sciences To Go Coed After 111 Years

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A New York school founded as a women's college in 1904 will go coed next fall.

The College of New Rochelle in Westchester County announced Tuesday that its board of trustees has voted unanimously to admit men.

The decision affects the college's School of Arts and Sciences.

"It's a tradition and a value that we've held onto for 111 years, so while it's very exciting, there's also a sense of sadness and loss that has to be acknowledged," school President Judith Huntington said. "We move forward with great optimism for the future of the College of New Rochelle but at the same time have great respect for this tradition."

Huntington said trustees had been considering the move for several years largely due to declining demand in women's interest in all-women's colleges.

The college's graduate school, the nursing school and the School of New Resources, which serves adult learners, have been coed since the 1970s.

Board Chairwoman Elizabeth LeVaca said trustees are excited about the future for both the School of Arts and Sciences and the college as a whole.

The college was founded by the Ursuline order of Roman Catholic nuns.
