Clinton, Sanders Holding Campaign Events In New York

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Both Democratic candidates for president are holding campaign events in New York on Thursday.

Hillary Clinton headed to Westchester County Thursday for a campaign event at SUNY Purchase. Her husband, former President Bill Clinton, stumps for his wife at several different campaign organizing events at union offices across Manhattan, 1010 WINS' Steve Kastenbaum reports.

In the meantime, Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders headef to the South Bronx for a rally at St. Mary's Park. Sanders spoke Wednesday night on MSNBC.

"What you really need in this country is a progressive party standing with the working class and the middle class of this country," he said.

Earlier Wednesday, Clinton held a rally at the Apollo Theater in Harlem.

"We're going to work for every vote in every part of this state just like I did when I ran for the senate because New Yorkers took a chance on me and I will never forget that," she said.

On the GOP side, New York businessman Donald Trump is now fighting against backlash after he said that if abortion becomes illegal, women who undergo the procedure should face "some sort of punishment.''

The criticism came fast and furious from all sides, including March for Life, which said in a statement: "Women who choose abortion often do so in desperation and then deeply regret such a decision. No pro-lifer would ever want to punish a woman who has chosen abortion."

Trump's campaign later clarified, saying in part, if abortion were outlawed "the doctor or any other person performing this illegal act upon a woman would be held legally responsible, not the woman."

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, a Trump supporter, defended him.

"People misspeak all the time but with him, everybody wants to make a bigger deal over it," he said.

Clinton and Sanders along with Trump's Republican rivals, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz and Ohio Gov. John Kasich, all condemned Trump's original remarks.

Meanwhile, a new Quinnipiac University poll Thursday of New York voters has Clinton ahead of Sanders 54 to 42 percent.

On the GOP side, Trump leads the Republican field in the state with 56 percent followed by Cruz at 20 percent and Kasich at 19 percent.
