City Council Officials Working To Prevent NYC Teacher Layoffs

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) – Cut costs, not teachers. That's the message of City Council.

Speaker Christine Quinn says she will do everything in her power to prevent teacher layoffs planned by the Bloomberg administration.

She says she's identified $75 million in cuts the Department of Education can make to help keep teachers in the classroom.

"We proposed things like cutting back on teacher recruitment, which really doesn't make a lot of sense since we're contemplating layoffs," said Quinn. "Cutting back on outside contracts towards professional development, not a terrible thing to do but not as critical as having teachers in the classroom."

Quinn says the mayor doesn't want to lay off teachers adding, "Our job is to present options to prevent that."
