'Voice' Singer Christina Grimmie Remembered In NJ Memorial Service

MEDFORD, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Family and friends are gathering in New Jersey to remember "The Voice'' singer Christina Grimmie.

The 22-year-old was shot to death last week as she signed autographs after a show in Orlando, Florida. Her assailant fatally shot himself after being tackled by her brother.

A viewing will take place Friday at Fellowship Alliance Chapel in Medford, followed by a memorial service Friday night.

The YouTube star was widely known from her appearances on NBC's "The Voice'' two years ago. Pop star Adam Levine, who coached Grimmie while she was on the show, offered to pay the funeral expenses.

"Christina was a natural, a gifted talent that comes along so rarely. She was taken from us too soon. This is yet another senseless act of extreme violence. I am left stunned and confused how these things can conceivably continue to happen in our world," Levine said in a statement posted on his Facebook page following the shooting.

Grimmie lived in Evesham, a small community about 20 miles from Philadelphia, before moving to Los Angeles in 2012. Evesham Township held a vigil Monday night in her honor.

Authorities said she apparently had no personal connection to the man who shot her. The gunman fatally shot himself after being tackled by her brother. Police and witnesses said more people may have been hurt had the brother not stepped in.

According to police, the shooter, 27-year-old Kevin James Loibl, had two guns and apparently traveled from another city in Florida to Orlando to confront the singer.
