NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- 400 children and teachers converged on NYU Polytechnic School of Engineering at MetroTech Center in Brooklyn Saturday for the qualifying round of the First Lego League competition.
The competition aims to introduce children between 9 and 14 years old to real-world engineering challenges by constructing robotic devices using Lego Mindstorms technology.
The kids were then given the opportunity to use their robot to complete a variety tasks which simulate a real-life technological challenge, such as exploring energy alternatives or the surface of Mars.
One group of kids came up with a design for robots that could help people in a natural disaster, 1010 WINS reported.
Junior First Lego is a similar program that allows children as young as 6 years old get involved.
