Child hit and killed by school bus in Rockland County, police say

A child was killed after being hit by a school bus Wednesday morning in Rockland County, according to police.

Officers responded just after 9 a.m. to the intersection of Blauvelt Road and Manor Drive in Monsey. 

The Ramapo Police Department said a Yeshiva school bus hit and killed the young girl, who was 7 years old.   

Police the bus driver is 28 years old and no criminality is suspected.

The apparent accident happened at a busy time of the morning in a densely populated neighborhood full of large families. 

Traffic safety is a major focus for Ramapo police due to the large number of children in the community. Officers run education programs and police say they are aggressive with enforcement.

More than 16,000 traffic citations were written by the police department in the last year.
