Child Dead After Vehicle Hits Pedestrians In Bronx
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) - Authorities say an 8-year-old child has died after a vehicle jumped a curb and struck pedestrians outside a Bronx school.
The accident occurred around 2:45 p.m. Friday outside Public School 307, at Eames Place and Claflin Avenue in the Kingsbridge Heights neighborhood.
A blue car hit an 8-year-old, a 9-year-old girl and four women – the oldest of them 66. The 8-year-old girl was killed.
Investigators said the driver – identified by police as a 55-year-old woman -- backed up the wrong way on Eames Place and jumped the curb.
"She might have lost control, hit reverse. I guess she hit them in reverse. I guess she thought she was hitting the brake," witness Nestor Mangual told CBS 2. "It's a very sad scene. Yes, it's a tragic accident."
Schools Chancellor Carmen Farina says her "heart breaks" for the child's family and the entire school community.
