The New York Archbishop said he's honored and looking forward to it.

"I'm speaking to God of course on behalf of America and on behalf of the Republican [National] Convention as I will with the Democrats," he told WCBS 880 reporter Rich Lamb. "I'm just thanking him for the gift of freedom and democracy and the very process that has allowed us to exist as a democracy and a republic, to come together in freedom and civility to choose our leaders."

"I don't think we should take that for granted and I think it's a worthy sentiment to have to praise God for that blessing," he added. "God bless America."

The Cardinal also said, "I just recall how often God is part of our foundational documents - 'In God We Trust,' 'One Nation Under God.' These are beautiful sentiments and the election process allows us, I think, to recall the religious foundation of our beloved republic."

Dolan also spoke about the bitter partisanship of the campaign.

"One of the temptations of a political season is that instead of being unifying for the country, it becomes divisive. So anybody can serve as a bridge, as a source of reconciliation, bringing people together in civility and patriotism," he said. "It should be pastors. So, boy, if I can lead the prayer at both conventions, I thought 'Good. That somewhat a validation of my role as an impartial pastor."

He noted that he will be on stage praying not endorsing.
