Can Bilal Powell Continue His Strong Play Against The Titans?
By Tyson Rauch
Heading into the 2013 season, the New York Jets anticipated having a backfield that featured Chris Ivory, Mike Goodson, and Bilal Powell. The trio would provide Gang Green with a dynamic set of playmakers that would flourish in the west coast offense. But heading into the fourth week of the season against the Tennessee Titans, the Jets' plans have not gone as expected, as Mike Goodson has to serve a four game suspension while Ivory has been hindered by injuries. Running back Bilal Powell has been forced into starting duty and the early results have been outstanding—the Jets running back is second in the AFC with 226 rushing yards.
Tough test ahead
On Sunday, Powell will once again be featured, as Chris Ivory has been ruled out with a hamstring injury. The Jets running back will be facing a tough test as the Tennessee Titans defense has been very good against the run, ranking 13th in the NFL. Bilal Powell must continue to run with his physical style and make enough plays to keep the Titans defense off balance. The Jets running back also has to remain very consistent in terms of blocking and pass protection, as the Tennessee defense is very aggressive with blitz packages.
Running back Alex Green will backup Powell with fullback Tommy Bohanon playing the role of the hybrid back.
Milliner out
The Jets will be missing rookie defensive back Dee Milliner on Sunday, as the rookie continues to battle a hamstring injury. Milliner, who has been struggling in coverage of late, is trying to work his way back into the starting lineup. Darrin Walls is slated to replace Milliner while Kyle Wilson will play the nickel/third defensive back role.
Britt questionable
The Tennessee Titans could be without wide receiver Kenny Britt as the playmaker recovers from a rib injury. The talented pass catcher has been battling issues on and off the field, but still brings game-breaking ability to the Titans offense. If Britt is unable to play, Kendall Wright and Justin Hunter will see additional reps.
Walker probable
It appears like Titans tight end Delanie Walker is going to try and play on Sunday. The Tennessee tight end has been suffering from a toe injury, but has given an indication that he will give it a go on game day. Walker is a versatile player for the Titans and would be a huge lift for both the passing and running game.
Former Jet not playing
Running back Shonn Greene will miss Sunday's game with a knee injury. The former Jet has been a disappointment so far as he has only four carries this season. Jackie Battle has been very effective replacing Greene.
