Video: 65-Year-Old Man Sucker Punched On Brooklyn Street
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The NYPD is searching for a suspect who allegedly punched a 65-year-old man in the face in Brooklyn earlier this month.
Victim Richard Carey was walking on Joralemon Street in Brooklyn Heights at around 11:15 p.m. on July 6 when he was assaulted by three men and a woman, police said.
The sucker punch was so violent, it broke the victim's glasses and sent him falling to the floor.
Just as I was right by the tree...fishing for my keys...and next thing I knew I was upside down in the bushes," Carey said.
Carey was taken to a local hospital where he was treated for a laceration to his eye, police said. He was later released.
Two weeks later, Carey still wonders why he was attacked.
"Completely blindsided. This kid ran up on my blindside and ran at me so that the momentum of his punch lifted me up in the air and turned me over," he said.
Carey thinks the man who attacked him was out looking for trouble.
"I think it was a knockout game," Carey said. "I think it was the "b-s" that kids started a couple years ago ad started on social media, like 'look how cool I am,' you know?"
People in the neighborhood were shocked and disgusted as they watched the surveillance video.
"I think the park has brought a lot of people has brought a lot of people into the neighborhood who don't really have respect that this is a residential neighborhood," one resident told CBS2's Esha Ray.
Some said it never hurts to be on guard.
"Just be aware, when you're walking down the street and just be conscious of who's around you all the time," Sara said.
Carey said his attacker never said a word, but he's definitely got some words for his attacker.
"Stop it, it's stupid. It doesn't mean you're cool, and you're telling me what hit somebody when they're not even looking. Give me a break," he said.
The NYPD describes the suspect who punched the man as being around 5'10," 160 pounds and was last seen wearing black sneakers and a white T-shirt.
