Good Samaritan helps Bronx mother after seeing story on devastating fire: "He's been a blessing"

Two months ago, we introduced you to a mother of three who had lost nearly everything after a fire forced her family from their Bronx apartment.

A complete stranger saw her story and decided he had to help.

CBS News New York's Naveen Dhaliwal first met Nina Chambers back on June 28. Her apartment was in shambles after a fire in a neighboring building on East 160th Street in Melrose.

"I saw everything that me and my children own gone. We lost everything," she said at the time.

The 36-year-old was struggling, living in a hotel with her three children. She had an overdraft on her TD Bank account as she was buying food for her kids.

Over on Long Island, Scott Evans was watching her story.

"This was something, one of the things that I could do something about," he said.

Evans said he went to TD Bank, but they would not allow him to put money directly into Chambers' account. So he emailed Dhaliwal, who connected him to Chambers.

Now, this stranger, who Chambers has never met, has provided her with $3,000 to help feed her children and get them ready for school.

"He didn't ask me for anything except, how can I help you?" Chambers said.

Eight weeks after the fire, Chambers' apartment is still in disarray, but her spirit has been uplifted by Evans.

"It's priceless. You don't meet people that do those type of things for nothing. It's rare," Chambers said.

Chambers has since secured a new apartment. She has also graduated from school with a degree in human services.

She says with Evans in her life, she realizes the greatest gift can't be measured in dollars.

"Scott is an angel," Chambers said. "Scott is one of those people, you don't know he's there until he shows you what he can do."

Evans grew emotional when Dhaliwal told him what Chambers had said.

"I'm blessed that I can do it. We have no mortgage. We have no car payments," he said.

Chambers hopes to meet him in person, saying he's had an everlasting impact at her greatest time in need.

"He's been a blessing ever since," she said. "I just want to get on my feet so I can pay it forward."
