NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Mayor Michael Bloomberg calls the way New York recovered from the terrorist attacks nearly 10 years ago the comeback story that's the envy of cities nationwide.
"Over the past decade, New York City has come roaring back faster and stronger than anyone thought possible," Bloomberg said Tuesday. "And the biggest cuts in crime, the biggest growth in population and the biggest investments in commercial development have all happened right here in lower Manhattan."

The mayor says the revitalization of lower Manhattan will stand as our greatest monument to those we lost on 9/11 and to our unshakeable faith in a free and open Democratic society.
"With every new resident that moves downtown, with every new business and house of worship that opens its doors, with every new student that enters a classroom we honor the spirit of those we lost that day, we honor the values that define our city and we honor the constitution that sustains our great nation," Bloomberg said.
He believes the rebirth of downtown Manhattan will be remembered as "the greatest comeback in American history."
Last month, the Downtown Alliance said Lower Manhattan is "thriving as never before." The group said the area is one of the fastest-growing residential neighborhoods in New York City, adding the population has more than doubled to 56,000 over the last ten years.
They also noted that while thousands of residents were displaced and hundreds of stores and restaurants closed down, "an influx of diverse new businesses" have contributed to the "neighborhood's resurgence."
