Bill Would Ban Workplace Discrimination Based On Religious Garb
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- New York state lawmakers on Sunday discussed plans to take aim at religious discrimination in the workplace.
Joined by a coalition of religious leaders, state Assemblyman David Weprin (D-Queens) discussed a bill that would protect workers who want to wear religious garb.
The legislation would prohibit discrimination against those who wear attire such as hijabs, beards and turbans for religious reasons.
"No one should have to choose between their job, making a living, supporting their family and observing their religion to the fullest extent," Weprin said.
The state Assembly unanimously passed the bill last week. The state Senate is expected to take up an identical bill when it reconvenes.
The legislation comes after several cases of workplace discrimination.
