CBS New York is sharing our top picks for the best family-friendly Southern restaurants in Manhattan, Brooklyn, the Bronx, Queens and Staten Island. By Kimberly Coleman.
There are so many famous Southern food restaurants in Manhattan (including Sylvia's, Amy Ruth's, The Pink Tea Cup and Melba's). However, we want to highlight Soul Fixins' because it is a simple space in Chelsea with consistently excellent food. The meatloaf and fried whiting are tasty while the fried chicken is a standout because it is both juicy and crisp. The sides and desserts also get high marks. Even the drinks have a Southern flair – especially the sweet tea. There truly is something for every Southern food and drink lover.
Don't let the name fool you. This ""upscale, Southern American cuisine" restaurant is a wonderful place for families. Enjoy classics like fried green tomatoes and smothered pork chops mixed in with chile crusted salmon. There is definitely something for everyone at this restaurant whose brunch biscuits were even featured on The Oprah Winfrey Show! (Photo Credit: Singelicious Cafe)

Mitchell's Soul Food
Think of some of your favorite Southern comfort food dishes. Does fried chicken, macaroni and cheese and collard greens top your list? If they do, then you definitely want to visit Mitchell's in Prospect Heights. The atmosphere is plain and simple but the food is superb. We can't decide what we like best…the main courses, the sides or the delicious crumbly cornbread. Fortunately, you don't have to choose. You can have it all (and dessert!) at very reasonable prices. Sam's Soul Food Restaurant & Bar
If you are looking for both excellent food and great service, this is the place for you. All of the menu items receive high marks, but their tender BBQ pork ribs are especially worth a trip to the Bronx. (For the times that you want to leave the kids at home, be aware that Sam's offers free live jazz and blues on select days.)

Hollis Famous Burgers
This is another case of "don't let the name fool you". Although this Hollis spot does make great burgers, it also has some of the best soul food in Queens. The wings and waffles are a daily Southern treat and you definitely do not want to miss their "Soul Food Sundays" when they serve special meals. The BBQ beef short ribs, mac & cheese and collard greens receive special raves. While you are there, be sure to take a peek at all of the Hollis Hip Hop memorabilia (featuring Russell Simmons, Run DMC, LL Cool J and many others).
