Bees Blessed At The Cathedral Of St. John The Divine

The blessing of the bees was held at the gothic Cathedral of St. John the Divine at 1047 Amsterdam Avenue.
"This is the first time I have been asked to bless bees," said Episcopal Bishop Mark Sisk.
There wasn't much of a buzz coming from the insects because the bee keeper took no chances and applied smoke to the community to make sure the hard working insects were calm and docile.
Then Sisk used a leafy maple twig to sprinkle a little holy water.
"In medieval thought, there are lots of images of bees," the Bishop told Lamb. "You'll see bees in stained glass windows and whatnot because of the fact that they were the source of sweetness and my prayer was to evoke the notion of the sweetness of God's love."
He heaped praise on the bees as sacrificing for each other to build a common good.
Of course, the bees weren't the first animals to enter the church. The blessing of the animals has been an annual event there for decades.
