Beach Badge Sales Have Belmar Mayor Optimistic

BELMAR, N.J. (CBSNewYork) - It's still two months until the summer season begins, but something in the Jersey Shore borough of Belmar, which was devastated by Sandy, has the mayor feeling the tide is turning.

The beach badge business in Belmar is booming.

"We've seen an increase in our beach badge sales of 47 percent," Mayor Matt Doherty told WCBS 880 reporter Peter Haskell.

That remarkable number is year-to-date.

"If you think about it, we have no beach. We have no boardwalk," Doherty said.

It shows the feeling of commitment people have.

"People in New York / New Jersey, they care about the Jersey Shore. They want to see us recover," he said.

Prices on beach badges have not changed, and as a result of the tremendous early sales, they won't have to go up by even $1.

A new boardwalk should be complete by May.
