Officials: 4 Critically Injured, 100 Displaced In Connecticut Apartment Fire

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. (CBSANewYork/AP) -- Nine people have been injured, four of them critically, and as many as 100 people were displaced by an early morning fire in a West Hartford apartment complex.

The fire at the Westwood Apartments and Condominiums at 140 Kane Street was reported at about 2:15 a.m. Thursday.

Fire Chief Gary Allyn says several people and pets had to be rescued from porches.

The nine people taken to the hospital sustained smoke inhalation and respiratory burns.

Allyn says the fire broke out on the second floor and the building did not have sprinklers.

The cause remains under investigation.

The American Red Cross has opened a shelter to help some of the displaced residents.
