NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- New York City's largest animal rescue organization is rolling out its first mobile adoption center.
The Animal Care and Control of NYC set up the 26-foot vehicle in Union Square Park on Sunday for its inaugural adoption of dogs and cats.
Risa Weinstock, executive director of the nonprofit, says the $120,000 mobile unit will reach New Yorkers in all five boroughs more easily.
"We take in over 30,000 animals every year and in this past year 28,000 were dogs and cats. That's a lot of animals looking for a second home," Weinstock said.
It was funded by the ASPCA and Fenwick Keats Real Estate Company.
Animal Care and Control also offers animals for adoptions at its centers in Manhattan, Brooklyn and State Island seven days a week.
Each year, about 30,000 animals in need arrive at the organization that operates on a contract with the city.
"The mobile adoption center allows us to go to communities and make it more convenient for all residents of New York City," Weinstock explained.
ASPCA President and Ceo Matt Bershadker said that mobile adoption will allow the ACC to reach more people.
"Like any retailer one of the biggest challenges that anybody has is getting people into the store so instead of getting people into the store we're bringing the product to them," Bershadker said.
