American Dream Mall Hosting Job Fair Wednesday And Thursday

LYNDHURST, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- The long-delayed American Dream mall will allegedly open this fall.

If it does, thousands of jobs come with it.

Inside the mega-mall being constructed at the Meadowlands, there is an amusement park, ice rink, ski slope, water park and more.

The three million square foot shopping, dining and entertainment center needs more than 1,200 workers to run it.

"I'm hoping this will be the opportunity I'm looking for," said Jersey City resident Jose Vega.

A job fair is being held at Bergen County Community College in Lyndhurst to apply to be part of the "Dream Team."

"I'm semi-retired, so I want to supplement my income, see what they got," said Teaneck resident Chris Hasselkus.

Part-time and full-time jobs are available. Positions vary from retail and restaurant workers, to lifeguards, ride operators, parking attendants, custodians, engineers and more.

"Security, guest services," said job hopeful Jeffery Scholack of Clifton.

"I'm looking for ride monitor. That sounds very fun to me," said a man named Donnie from Hackensack.

"I'm trying to get a security position," said Hackensack resident Kiysau.

Rutgers economist Yana Rodgers says not all jobs are created equal. The best are full time, with benefits.

"Bergen County is one of the highest cost of living in New Jersey. It's not clear how minimum wage job without benefits is really going ot help working families or even a single mom," Rodgers said.

Owners claim the project - once known as Xanadu - will actually open October 25. That's 16 years and several owners later.

Rodgers says the opening of the center will have a large overall affect on the economy.

The job fair runs until 7 p.m. Wednesday and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
