ACLU Maps Out N.J. Same-Sex Marriages
NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP/CBSNewYork) - Nearly 4,000 marriage licenses have been issued to same-sex couples in New Jersey since the state Supreme Court cleared the way for gay marriages one year ago.
Monmouth County has issued the most same-sex marriage licenses with about 406. That was followed by Essex and Camden counties.
The total number does not include licenses of couples who married outside of the state before the ruling.
The state's highest court last October refused to grant a stay that would have delayed implementation of a lower-court ruling that the state must recognize gay marriages. The weddings began three days later.
The state chapter of the American Civil Liberty Union has released an interactive digital map which shows where the marriages have taken place.
Gov. Chris Christie says it shouldn't be up to the Supreme Court to decide whether states allow same-sex marriage.
The Republican governor weighed in on the court's decision last week not to hear appeals from a handful of states, paving the way for a significant expansion across the country.
But Christie told reporters he doesn't believe gay marriage is something that should be imposed by the highest court.
"I think this is something each state should have the ability to decide on their own," Christie said.
Christie personally opposes same-sex marriage butdropped his administration's legal challenge to a lower court's decision allowing it last year.
