Now in its 11th year, the Big Apple Film Festival showcases independent movies from, you guessed it, the Big Apple. But while the BAFF primarily celebrates the NYC independent film-making community, it also screens and promotes quality films from around the US and abroad. Awards include NY Emerging Talent, Best Short Film, Best Student Film, and the Golden Apple. Wednesday, November 5, through Sunday, November 9, see schedule for details, tickets required.

For three nights, the New York Festival of Light will transform DUMBO into one big art installation. New York has no shortage of light, sure, but the designers, visual artists, technicians, performance artists, and musicians from around the world who'll be on hand work magic with electricity. Flipping a switch and illuminating a room might never feel the same to you again. Thursday, November 6, through Saturday, November 8, see schedule for details, free.

The Brooklyn Electronic Music Festival (aka BEMF) began in 2008 to connect fans and "celebrate the city's electronic musical landscape [by] proudly featuring both emerging and established artists from the New York boroughs and beyond sharing the same stage." You can catch both bands and DJs, all offering beats galore. Friday, November 7, and Saturday, November 8, see schedule for details, $120 for general admission to festival, tickets required.

At Comic Arts Brooklyn, you'll find more than 100 artists, including Chip Kidd, Art Spiegelman, Marguerite Van Cook, and Roz Chast, vendors, and exhibitors, each and every one of whom is dedicated to celebrating comics and cartoons. You can see cells, hear talks, gawk at your favorite artists and creators, swap stories and memorabilia, and just soak up the creative atmosphere. Saturday, November 8, and Sunday, November 9, see schedule for details, free.
